Multi-professional Cadaveric Surgical Course – North West

HEE (North) supports the NW Cadaveric programme that is managed through Manchester Foundation Trust (MFT) where all surgical trainees are offered a structured core simulation experience using cadaveric. To date the feedback form this has been very positive.

Mixed Realty Laparoscopic Simulator Project – North East, North West and Yorkshire & Humber (1 pilot site in each region)

HEE (North) have commissioned a Laparoscopic Simulator project to explore the value of using Augmented Reality (AR) to enable immersive learning programs to support education and service to provide safe patient care. We will run a pilot to test its application in Healthcare using a Mixed Realty Laparoscopic Simulator unit at 3 clinical sites across the North to assess its educational impact and demonstration of competency. Hardware and equipment for the project provided by Inovus Medical and evaluation by Edge Hill University.

Simulation Based Education in Healthcare Education Programmes

HEE(North) have commissioned The Centre for Pharmacy Workforce Studies (CPWS) at the University of Manchester to undertake a review of the integration of simulation-based education across the North of England. The main areas are to review how simulation is used in undergraduate healthcare programmes and to identify opportunities for its expansion. The approach taken has been a literary review, followed by a survey and interviews with stakeholders and a workshop to test the findings.

The findings of the review have provided a useful guide for further development and provision of simulation-based education, not just for pre-registration but also for post graduate. It provides an understanding of the science and evidence behind the successful delivery of simulation-based education and helps clarify the hurdles that are preventing its expansion. There are some key areas identified as barriers in the report and the next phase of the project will be to identify how we can help support overcoming these.

Executive Summary – Scoping the integration of simulation-based education in the delivery of healthcare education programmes delivered within the North of England: opportunities for further expansion
